Talking to: Jerry Mather, SHEQ Manager
We’ve been asking some of the STEM Construction team a few questions to help you to get to know them. This time, we’re talking to Jerry Mather, our SHEQ Manager.
Tell us what you do at STEM Construction, Jerry.
I look after the management of the health, safety, environment and quality systems. It’s a wide and varied job, so I get involved in other bits too, as required.
When you’re not at work, what can we find you doing?
I enjoy being outdoors – walking, cycling or in a beer garden. When it’s too cold and wet I can be found tinkering with classic minis in the garage.
How did you find yourself working in Civil Engineering?
Some would say it was the worst career advice I ever got! … but I’ve spent more than 40 years in the industry and loved every minute of it.
How would your best friend describe you?
A cheeky little chappie would do anything for you.
If you weren’t looking after the systems at STEM, what would you be doing?
As retirement looms my dream would be preparing cars for motorsport, especially rallying.
What are your favourite shows on TV or radio?
I don’t watch a lot of TV but like a lot of other people, ‘Line Of Duty’ kept me interested over each series.
What’s the best thing about working at STEM Construction?
There’s never a dull day at the farm. Variety is the key – along with being upbeat and positive every day.
Do you have any final words of wisdom?
Just a question: What do we do with all the working knowledge and experience we gain through life?
